Slack: business messaging done properly, managed alongside your wider IT

Slack is the default workplace messaging platform for creative agencies, professional services firms, and tech-forward businesses. Channels, threads, integrations, file sharing, and Slack Connect for working with clients and partners have made it the everyday operating layer for how teams actually communicate. For many of the businesses we look after, Slack is where the work happens.

Dr Logic supports Slack as part of ongoing managed IT. That means getting it set up properly for your business, integrating it with your identity platform so people sign in cleanly and leave cleanly, configuring it to meet your security and compliance requirements, and dealing with the admin and support work so your team can focus on actually using it. Slack is one of those tools that looks simple on the surface and gets considerably more complicated once you scale past 30 or 40 users.

This sits inside our IT Success® Plans and connects to the wider IT support we deliver across your environment. Slack rarely lives alone: it’s connected to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, your identity provider, your file storage, and dozens of other tools. We make sure all of that works together.

What Dr Logic delivers with Slack

  • Workspace setup and configuration. We set up your Slack workspace (or workspaces, for businesses with multiple brands), configure the right defaults for channels, permissions, retention, file uploads, and external sharing, and align it with how your business actually works.
  • Single sign-on and identity integration. We connect Slack to your identity platform (Entra ID, Google Workspace, JumpCloud, or Okta) so users sign in with one set of credentials and access is controlled centrally. SCIM provisioning, where available, automates user creation and deactivation.
  • User lifecycle management. New starters get added to Slack as part of onboarding, with the right channels, permissions, and integrations from day one. Leavers are deactivated promptly so they can’t access conversations after they exit. This sounds basic but is one of the most commonly broken parts of Slack admin.
  • Security and compliance configuration. We configure session policies, MFA enforcement, data retention, and Slack Connect controls so the platform meets your security and compliance requirements. This ties into the broader cyber security work we do, including Cyber Essentials alignment.
  • Slack Connect and external collaboration. Slack Connect (shared channels with clients, suppliers, and partners) is one of Slack’s most powerful features and also the easiest place to leak data accidentally. We configure the right controls, approval workflows, and external sharing policies so you get the benefit without the risk.
  • App and integration management. We manage the Slack app directory, approve and configure integrations, and handle the admin work around connecting tools like Google Drive, Notion, Jira, Asana, Linear, and the various agency-specific tools your team uses. Apps are vetted properly rather than approved blindly.
  • Custom workflows and automation. Where it’s useful, we help build Slack Workflow Builder automations or integrate with tools like Zapier and Workato to remove repetitive process from your team’s day. Approvals, notifications, request forms, onboarding flows: all candidates for automation.
  • Ongoing admin and support. Day-to-day Slack admin (user changes, channel cleanup, integration troubleshooting, billing, plan changes) sits with us as part of the IT Success® Plan. Your team doesn’t need to nominate a “Slack admin” who ends up doing IT work in their spare time.

Expertise and partner status

Dr Logic supports Slack across many of the agencies and professional services firms we look after. It’s one of the most common tools in our client base and we have deep working experience with the platform, from setup through to enterprise-level admin and integration work. We’re not a formal Slack reseller partner, but we work with Slack workspaces every day and treat it as a serious part of the managed IT stack rather than an afterthought. This complements our Apple Premium Technical Partner work, since the Mac-first creative and professional services firms we serve are exactly the businesses most heavily invested in Slack.

When Slack is the right fit, and when it isn’t

Slack is almost always the right call for creative agencies, professional services firms, and tech-forward businesses that have already adopted it, and for businesses choosing between messaging platforms where culture and workflow lean toward channels and threaded conversation. Slack Connect for client and supplier collaboration is genuinely class-leading and a real reason to pick Slack over the alternatives.

That said, Microsoft Teams is increasingly capable and often the right choice for businesses deeply invested in Microsoft 365, particularly where licensing already includes Teams and meeting and document workflows live in the Microsoft ecosystem. Google Chat is bundled with Google Workspace and works well for smaller, Google-native teams, though it lags on integrations and channel-based culture. The honest answer is that messaging platform choice often comes down to which ecosystem you’re already in and which culture fits your team.

The other thing worth saying: Slack is expensive at scale, particularly on Business+ and Enterprise Grid tiers. Whether the cost is justified depends on how much your business genuinely runs on Slack. For some it absolutely is. For others, Teams or Google Chat does enough at considerably lower cost. We’ll be straight with you about it. Get in touch and we’ll talk it through.

What does Dr Logic do with Slack?

We handle setup, identity integration, security configuration, user lifecycle, app and integration management, and ongoing admin and support, as part of an IT Success® Plan. Your team uses Slack; we make sure it’s running properly, securely, and connected to the rest of your IT estate.

Do you resell Slack licences?

Slack is typically purchased directly or through Salesforce, and we don’t position ourselves as a reseller. What we do is help you pick the right plan, configure it properly, integrate it with everything else, and run the admin so you don’t have to.

How does Slack work with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365?

Slack integrates with both. With Google Workspace, you get sign-in through Google, calendar integration, Drive previews and sharing, and Gmail integration. With Microsoft 365, you get sign-in through Entra ID (where SSO is licensed), Outlook calendar integration, OneDrive and SharePoint previews, and Teams calling integration in some configurations. We handle the integration setup and ongoing admin.

What's the difference between Slack's plans?

Slack’s plans differ on message history, advanced security features, SSO, SCIM, compliance exports, and admin controls. The main jump for businesses in the 70 to 150 user range is usually from Pro to Business+ for SSO, SCIM, and data retention controls. Enterprise Grid sits above that for businesses with multiple workspaces, advanced compliance, or scale. We’ll recommend the right tier based on what you actually need.

Does Slack help (or hurt) with Cyber Essentials?

Slack itself isn’t a Cyber Essentials product, but how you configure it matters. We apply session controls, MFA enforcement, retention policies, and external sharing controls that align with Cyber Essentials requirements. A badly configured Slack workspace can be a real source of risk, with sensitive data leaking through Slack Connect, public channels, or external apps. A properly configured one isn’t.

How does Slack compare to Microsoft Teams?

Teams has caught up significantly on messaging and is the natural choice for businesses already deep in Microsoft 365, particularly where Teams is included in your licence. Slack still wins on channel culture, integration depth, Slack Connect for external collaboration, and overall user experience for messaging-first teams. The right answer often comes down to which ecosystem you’re already in and how your team actually wants to work.

Is Slack worth the cost for a business our size?

For businesses where Slack is the operating layer of how work happens (which is true of many creative agencies and tech-forward professional services firms) the answer is usually yes. For businesses where messaging is a smaller part of how the team works, or where Microsoft 365 is already paid for and Teams would do the job, the maths often favours the alternative. We’ll model it honestly against your specific situation.

Ready to Transform the Way Your Teams Collaborate?

If you’re rolling out Slack, struggling with admin and integration overhead, weighing it up against Teams, or just want your existing Slack workspace configured properly and supported as part of your wider IT, we’d be happy to talk it through.
