What changed in the Cyber Essentials Danzell update?
Danzell (v3.3) came into force on 27 April 2026 and replaced the previous Willow question set. The five controls are unchanged, but Danzell introduces automatic failures for two requirements that were previously correctable non-compliances: missing MFA on any cloud service where it is available, and failure to apply high or critical patches within 14 days of release. A single gap in either area now fails the entire assessment.
Are AI tools in scope for Cyber Essentials?
Yes. Under Danzell, any cloud service that stores or processes organisational data is in scope. That includes AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and ChatGPT Enterprise. If MFA is not enabled on an AI tool your team uses, the assessment fails automatically. Shadow AI, tools employees are using without IT approval, creates scope exposure even if IT is unaware of them.
Does Cyber Essentials work differently for Mac businesses?
The five controls apply equally across all platforms, but the evidence requirements interact specifically with macOS and Apple’s toolset. DMS-enforced patch compliance reporting, Managed Apple Account configuration, and MFA enforcement via Apple Business all have specific setup requirements that differ from Windows environments. What is the difference between Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus?
Cyber Essentials is a verified self-assessment: you complete a detailed questionnaire, a director signs it off, and an accredited assessor reviews your answers. Cyber Essentials Plus adds independent technical testing: an assessor tests a sample of your actual enrolled devices to verify the controls are working as claimed. Under Danzell, CE Plus also includes a mandatory second device sample if failures are found in the first round.
What is the £25,000 cyber insurance benefit?
Any UK organisation with an annual turnover under £20 million that achieves Cyber Essentials certification covering its whole organisation is automatically entitled to £25,000 of cyber liability insurance, including a 24-hour incident response helpline.
