Barracuda: email security, cloud backup, and wider network protection, run as part of your managed IT

Barracuda is one of the longest-standing names in email security and has grown into a broader security and data protection vendor covering email, backup, firewalls, web application security, and archiving. For UK businesses where email remains the most common attack vector and Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace data needs protecting beyond what’s built in, Barracuda covers most of the security ground in one place.

Dr Logic works across the full Barracuda portfolio, though the two products we deploy most are Barracuda Email Protection and Barracuda Cloud-to-Cloud Backup. Email Protection sits in front of Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace to filter phishing, malware, and impersonation attempts. Cloud-to-Cloud Backup protects mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Google Workspace data against the things native retention won’t save you from. Where clients need wider Barracuda services (firewalls, web application protection, archiving, network security) we deploy and manage those too.

This sits inside our IT Success® Plans and forms part of the wider cyber security work we do. Licensing, configuration, monitoring, and incident response are all included, so there’s no separate security contract to manage.

What Dr Logic delivers with Barracuda

  • Email security deployment and tuning. We deploy Barracuda Email Protection across your domains, configure inbound filtering, set up impersonation protection, and tune the policies so genuine email gets through while phishing, malware, and spoofing attempts don’t. Tuning matters: out-of-the-box settings are a starting point, not an answer.
  • Advanced threat protection. We configure sandboxing and link protection so suspicious attachments and URLs are checked properly before they reach inboxes. This is the layer that catches the things signature-based filtering misses.
  • Account takeover and impersonation defence. We set up Barracuda’s AI-based impersonation protection to catch the targeted attacks that look like legitimate emails from your finance director, your CEO, or a supplier. These are the ones that do real damage.
  • Cloud-to-cloud backup for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. We deploy Barracuda Cloud-to-Cloud Backup to protect mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, and Google Workspace data against accidental deletion, ransomware, and the gaps in native retention. We verify backups and test recovery rather than assuming it works.
  • Wider Barracuda portfolio where needed. For clients with on-premises infrastructure, hosted servers, or web applications that need protecting, we deploy and manage Barracuda’s CloudGen Firewall, Web Application Firewall, and other portfolio products. These are less common in our base, but the capability is there when it’s the right fit.
  • Security awareness training. Where Barracuda’s training module is in scope, we set up phishing simulations and user training programmes so your team gets better at spotting attacks, not just relying on the filter to catch everything.
  • Monitoring, reporting, and incident response. Alerts come into our team. We investigate quarantined messages, release legitimate ones, deal with anything suspicious, and produce regular reports covering what was blocked, what was flagged, and where the risks sit.
  • Cyber Essentials and compliance alignment. Barracuda supports several Cyber Essentials controls, particularly around malware protection and secure configuration of email. We use it as evidence during certification and re-certification work.

Expertise and partner status

Dr Logic’s team has years of hands-on experience deploying and managing the Barracuda portfolio across client environments, with deepest experience on Email Protection and Cloud-to-Cloud Backup since these are the products most relevant to the businesses we look after. We hold the relevant administrative credentials and run Barracuda alongside our Apple Premium Technical Partner work and our broader managed security stack, which matters because protecting an Apple-heavy environment properly means understanding how email security, MDM, and endpoint protection all fit together.

When Barracuda is the right fit, and when it isn’t

Barracuda is often the right call for businesses on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace that want a serious layer of email security above what’s bundled into those platforms, particularly for clients in finance, professional services, or any sector where targeted phishing is a real risk. The cloud-to-cloud backup is genuinely useful and addresses a gap most businesses don’t realise they have. Being able to consolidate email security, backup, and wider network protection with a single vendor is a real advantage for some clients.

That said, it’s not the only option. Mimecast and Proofpoint offer comparable email security with different strengths around archiving and large-enterprise feature depth. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (Plan 1 or Plan 2) can be a reasonable choice if you’re already on the right E5 or add-on licence, since it’s bundled in. For backup specifically, Datto and AvePoint are also strong options for Microsoft 365 data protection.

The right answer depends on your stack, your risk profile, your existing licences, and whether you want one vendor handling multiple security layers or prefer best-of-breed across each one. Get in touch and we’ll talk it through honestly.

What does Barracuda do?

Barracuda covers email security, cloud backup, network firewalls, web application protection, archiving, and more. For most of the businesses we look after, the most relevant products are Email Protection (filtering inbound mail for phishing, malware, and impersonation) and Cloud-to-Cloud Backup (protecting Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace data). We can deploy and manage the wider portfolio where it’s the right fit.

Do you manage Barracuda for clients, or just resell it?

We manage it. Licensing is included in the IT Success® Plan, but the real work is deployment, tuning, monitoring, dealing with quarantined messages, and verifying backups. We don’t sell security products and step away.

Doesn't Microsoft 365 already include email security and backup?

Microsoft 365 includes basic filtering (Exchange Online Protection) and limited retention. It doesn’t include true backup. Native retention won’t always save you from ransomware encrypting OneDrive, a user deleting a mailbox, or an account compromise wiping shared content. Defender for Office 365 adds more advanced email protection but only on certain licence tiers, and even then many businesses still layer a dedicated email security product on top for better catch rates and cleaner administration.

How does Barracuda work alongside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?

Barracuda Email Protection sits in front of your mail platform, filtering inbound messages before they hit user mailboxes. Cloud-to-Cloud Backup connects to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and backs up mailboxes, files, and collaboration data to Barracuda’s cloud. Both are configured to work cleanly with whichever platform you’re on.

Does Barracuda help with Cyber Essentials?

Yes. It supports the malware protection and secure configuration controls directly, particularly the requirement to filter incoming email for malicious content. We use it as part of preparing clients for Cyber Essentials and maintaining compliance year on year.

How does Barracuda compare to Mimecast, Proofpoint, or Microsoft Defender?

Mimecast and Proofpoint are the closest comparable products on email security and generally compete at similar or higher price points, with stronger archiving and large-enterprise features. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 is bundled into certain Microsoft licences and may be enough on its own for some clients, though many businesses still layer something dedicated on top. Barracuda tends to win on a combination of catch rate, usability, price, and the option to consolidate multiple security layers (email, backup, firewall) with one vendor.

Is Barracuda cost-effective for a business our size?

For businesses in the 70 to 150 user range, Barracuda Email Protection and Cloud-to-Cloud Backup typically work out to a sensible per-user cost, particularly when both are bundled together. We’ll model the total cost against alternatives before recommending it, including whether your existing Microsoft 365 licence already covers part of what you need.

Ready to Strengthen Your Security Strategy?

If you’re reviewing your email security, worried about the backup gap in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, or looking at consolidating security layers with one vendor, we’d be happy to take an honest look and tell you what would actually work best for your business.
