1Password or Bitwarden – An Honest View
1Password Business is not the cheapest password manager on the market. Bitwarden offers a significantly lower per-user cost, an open-source architecture, and a credible security track record. For cost-conscious businesses with technical users who are happy to manage the platform themselves, it’s a reasonable choice.
The reason Dr Logic defaults to 1Password for managed clients is primarily the user experience and admin tooling. 1Password’s interface is polished enough that non-technical users adopt it without much friction, which matters in a 70–150 person business where IT can’t hand-hold every individual. The Watchtower security reporting, SCIM provisioning, and admin policy controls are also more mature than Bitwarden’s equivalent tools at present. For businesses where adoption is the challenge rather than cost, 1Password is usually the better investment.

Business (currently $7.99/user/month, billed annually) adds SCIM provisioning, SSO integration, advanced admin policies, custom security reporting, SIEM integration, and a complimentary Families plan for each user. For businesses in the 70–150 user range that Dr Logic typically works with, Business is the appropriate tier. Enterprise pricing is custom-quoted for larger or more complex deployments.
Does 1Password help with Cyber Essentials?
Directly, yes, it addresses the access control requirements. Cyber Essentials requires unique credentials per user, MFA where possible, and a process for revoking access when someone leaves. 1Password provides the mechanism for all three: per-user vaults, enforced two-factor authentication through admin policy, and centralised access revocation through SCIM integration with your identity provider. Dr Logic configures these controls as part of deployment and reviews them as part of ongoing Cyber Essentials support.
Is 1Password worth the cost compared to free alternatives?
For a managed business environment, yes. Browser-based password managers are free but provide no admin visibility, no access revocation on offboarding, and no audit trail.
