Freethought: Ethical, Sustainable Hosting Built for Business

Freethought is a UK-based hosting and infrastructure provider offering managed hosting, dedicated servers, virtual private servers, colocation, and DNS services from data centres in the UK. They’ve built a reputation in the agency and SME world for doing the unfashionable thing well: hosting that’s reliable, support that’s genuinely responsive, and infrastructure that doesn’t go sideways at the worst possible moment.

Dr Logic uses Freethought for client hosting, DNS management, and supporting infrastructure as part of ongoing managed IT support. For most of the agencies and professional services firms we work with, this means the websites, client portals, and supporting services that sit alongside the wider IT estate are hosted somewhere we trust, managed by us, and integrated into the same support model as everything else.

This sits inside our IT Success® Plans, so hosting isn’t a separate vendor relationship for you to manage. It’s part of how we deliver IT support, with one team looking after the whole picture.

What Dr Logic delivers with Freethought

  • Hosting setup and migration. We provision the right hosting environment for what you actually need (shared, VPS, dedicated, or cloud) and handle migration from your existing host if you’re moving across. No downtime drama, no DNS chaos.
  • DNS management. We manage your DNS records through Freethought, which means changes are handled properly and quickly, with proper records kept of what’s changed and why. This matters more than people think when something goes wrong.
  • Server and infrastructure monitoring. We monitor uptime, performance, and resource use on hosted infrastructure so we spot problems before you do. If something needs attention, we deal with it rather than waiting for you to notice the site is slow.
  • Backup and disaster recovery. We configure backup schedules, verify they’re working, and make sure recovery is actually possible (not just theoretically possible). This is the part most hosting setups quietly skip.
  • Security hardening and patching. We keep server operating systems, control panels, and supporting software patched and configured securely. This ties into the broader cyber security work we do across the client estate.
  • Integration with the wider IT stack. Hosting doesn’t sit in isolation. We make sure DNS, email routing, SSL certificates, and any related services line up properly with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, whichever platform you’re on.
  • Support without the queue ticket loop. When something needs Freethought’s involvement, we deal with them directly. You don’t end up bouncing between your IT support, your developer, and your hosting provider trying to work out whose problem it is.

Why Freethought

Freethought isn’t the biggest hosting provider in the UK, and that’s part of the point. The team is technically strong, support is responsive, and the infrastructure runs in UK data centres, which matters for clients with UK data sovereignty requirements. For the kind of businesses we look after (creative agencies, professional services firms, organisations where a website outage is a real problem) that combination matters more than it does for a hobby project.

We’ve worked with Freethought across many client environments and the relationship is built on years of doing the job properly. That experience runs alongside our work as an Apple Premium Technical Partner and across the wider stack we manage for clients.

When Freethought is the right fit, and when it isn’t

Freethought is the right call for clients who want UK-based hosting, real human support, and infrastructure that’s managed properly as part of their wider IT setup. It works particularly well for agency and professional services firms hosting their own website plus a handful of client sites or internal tools.

That said, it’s not always the answer. If your application genuinely needs hyperscale cloud infrastructure (heavy autoscaling, global edge distribution, deep AWS or Azure service integration), then AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud will be a better fit, and we can help you run those instead. Equally, if you’re hosting a single small WordPress site with no real business risk attached, a budget shared host may be all you need.

We’ll always be straight about what suits your situation. Get in touch and we’ll talk it through.

Who is Freethought?

Freethought is a UK-based hosting and infrastructure provider offering managed hosting, dedicated servers, VPS, colocation, and DNS services. They’ve been operating for years and are well-regarded in the UK agency and SME hosting market for technical quality and responsive support.

Do you manage Freethought hosting for clients, or just point them at it?

We manage it. Provisioning, configuration, DNS, backups, monitoring, patching, and support are all handled by us as part of an IT Success® Plan. You don’t deal directly with Freethought unless you want to.

Where is the hosting based?

Freethought operates from UK data centres, which matters for clients with UK data residency requirements or who simply prefer their hosting to live in the same jurisdiction as their business.

How does Freethought hosting work with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 email?

Hosting and email are usually separate concerns. We typically run your email through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 and use Freethought for web hosting and DNS, configuring MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records properly so email flows correctly and isn’t flagged as spam.

What about backups and disaster recovery?

We configure scheduled backups, verify them, and test recovery on a sensible cadence. Backup that hasn’t been tested isn’t backup. For business-critical systems, we’ll design a recovery setup that matches the actual cost of downtime to your business.

How does this compare to using AWS or Azure directly?

AWS and Azure are the right answer for applications that genuinely need hyperscale features, deep cloud-native services, or global distribution. For most agency and professional services workloads (a marketing site, a client portal, a small set of supporting services) they’re overkill, more expensive once you total the bill, and significantly more complex to run safely. Freethought wins on simplicity, cost, and support quality for that profile.

Is Freethought cost-effective for a business our size?

For most businesses in the 70 to 150 user range hosting a normal mix of web and supporting infrastructure, Freethought sits at a sensible price point and the support included in the relationship genuinely saves time. We’ll model the total cost against alternatives before recommending it.
