When businesses think about sustainable IT, they tend to think about recycling. That matters, but it is only one piece of a much larger picture. The decisions with the biggest environmental impact fall into three categories: what you buy, how long you keep it, and what happens to the data and devices you are no longer using.

Apple Trade-In allows businesses to return old hardware in exchange for credit. Those devices are either refurbished and resold or responsibly recycled, with materials like aluminium, cobalt, and rare earth elements recovered and fed back into the supply chain. Apple’s Daisy disassembly robot can now process 29 different iPhone models, with sister robots Dave and Taz focused on recovering rare earth magnets and Taptic Engines.
But Trade-In only works if businesses actually use it. A significant number of companies still have old MacBooks, iPhones, and iPads gathering dust. Every one of those devices contains materials that could be reclaimed and represents credit that could offset the cost of new hardware.
