WWDC set out what iOS 27 would include. The September event set out when it actually arrives, and added one detail WWDC didn’t cover at all.
The confirmed release date
Apple confirmed iOS 27 ships Monday 14 September, ahead of new iPhone hardware reaching customers on 18 September. That gap, software before hardware, is the opposite order to what many assumed, and it shortens the window between confirmation and general availability for any organisation still validating device management profiles.
Timing Angle: a release date ahead of the hardware it accompanies means the usual “test once the phones are in hand” approach doesn’t quite apply this cycle. Validation needs to happen against the software release candidate rather than waiting for physical devices to arrive.
What WWDC didn’t cover
One detail wasn’t part of the original WWDC announcement: Apple confirmed a daily usage limit on Siri AI within iOS 27, with a paid “expanded access” tier for those wanting more once the limit is reached. Pricing for expanded access hasn’t been published at the time of writing.
Device support and companion releases
- iOS 27 runs on devices back to iPhone 12. The iPhone 11 and the 2020 iPhone SE do not support it, and both will fall out of security update coverage on their current iOS version over time.
- watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27 follow the same 14 September timing.
- macOS 27, internally called Golden Gate, follows its own release candidate schedule shortly after, consistent with Apple’s usual pattern of macOS trailing iOS slightly in a given cycle.
Why the timing matters for a managed estate
IT Consideration: the confirmed 14 September date shortens the window to validate DMS (formerly MDM) profiles and any Siri AI usage restrictions before the update reaches a fleet. Any business still running iPhone 11 or 2020 SE devices should treat those as a fleet item to review now, since neither will receive this update, and staff on those devices will fall further behind on security patching from this point.
The Short Version: iOS 27 lands 14 September, four days before new hardware, which compresses the usual testing window. The one genuinely new detail since WWDC is the Siri AI daily usage limit, not yet priced for the paid tier beyond it. iPhone 11 and 2020 SE devices are the two models to check now, they won’t be getting this update.
