AirPods updates rarely reinvent the product, so the honest question every generation is whether there’s a specific reason to replace what’s already in your ears. This year, Apple’s answer is a feature that used to cost more: noise cancellation.
Noise cancellation, now for everyone
AirPods 5 removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, using a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio algorithms. The meaningful change isn’t the noise-reduction figure itself, it’s that ANC is now included on both models in the range, rather than reserved for the pricier tier as in previous generations.
Upgrade Angle: the clearest reason to replace an older pair sits with anyone still on a non-ANC model. This generation closes that gap at the entry price point rather than only at the premium tier, which changes the calculation for anyone who skipped ANC previously because of the cost.
What else moved
Beyond noise cancellation, several other changes are confirmed for this generation:
- UK pricing: £119 standard, or £139 with the Wireless Charging Case.
- Force sensor with volume swipe, a first for this open-ear design, available on the Wireless Charging Case model.
- Battery life: up to five hours of playback with ANC on a single charge, one hour longer than AirPods 4 with ANC, extending to 22 hours with the case.
- Live Translation is now available across the entire AirPods lineup, not just AirPods 5, a wider rollout than the headline product suggests.
- Hands-free Siri AI, including the ability to respond via head gestures rather than needing to speak.
Why this matters for a standard kit list
Standardisation Angle: businesses standardising kit for hybrid or remote staff calls no longer need to choose the premium tier specifically for noise cancellation, since it’s now available on the base model too. That simplifies one line item on a standard equipment list without changing the underlying decision about which tier suits a given role.
The Short Version: the real story this generation isn’t new hardware so much as a price-point shift, ANC moved from a premium feature to a standard one. If your team is still on non-ANC AirPods, that’s the concrete reason to consider replacing them. If ANC was already the reason you paid for the pricier tier last time, the base model at £119 now covers the same ground. Available from 18 September.
